When I started Corporate Mailing Service many years ago, there were only twenty clients. Like many young men at the time I was anxious to increase my client base. Since I had a mailing service, I thought mailing out brochures on my company was the way to go. Well, most of the responses I received, ie, mailings for underwater pool repair and other bizarre mailings requests, were not condusive to the services I could provide. They lacked clients from the major companies I was trying to target.

So, I thought I would take my message to the streets of San Francisco by handing out information. After being asked to leave most of the buildings of the clients I was targeting, I realized this was not the way to expand my client base.

What was finally successful? "Word of mouth advertising." Today, after twenty years, 90% of my clients are from this kind of exposure. However, the latest form of advertising is becoming a fast second - "the world wide web." This too has been a source of new business but, I must say, most of our world wide web new clients come to us from existing clients who found us on the world wide web and tried our service. Am I surprised? No, not really. Our service speaks for itself.
